David Taylor, FRSA

David Taylor is a painter and writer and is Professor Emeritus at the University of Brighton. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

David grew up in Oxford and painted from an early age (see below) and now lives in London where he paints from his studio in Brent. His abstract paintings have a strong emotional dynamic. Many offer references to sea and landscape. He paints mainly in acrylic using many layers of paint in quick succession to create depth and movement. Images are formed in the process of painting, being built, re-built, and transformed as the painting progresses. He has studied abstract painting and recently collaborated on a book project with Anniek Verholt (see https://www.anniekverholt.co.uk). He has exhibited at the Highgate Gallery and Hampstead School of Art, and his work is held in private collections in the UK.

David’s interest in art was shaped by his doctoral studies of Russian revolutionary abstract art from 1905 – 28, especially Suprematism. Alongside his academic studies David later developed an interest in post-war abstract expressionism and the work of contemporary painters influenced by that tradition.

David studied at the Universities of Bath, Manchester and the London School of Economics and has taught at The University of North London (later London Metropolitan University) and The University of Brighton where he was Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Professor of Social Theory and Social Policy. He has held visiting positions at City College, CUNY, New York, USA, and the University of Sydney, Australia. He has published several edited books and over thirty refereed journal articles and book chapters, and his work is widely cited
